The baby boomer generation is starting to retire and policy changes mean more people will have access to healthcare services. How will the healthcare system cope with the influx of new patients? That’s a question Chris McCarthy, Director of the Innovation Learning Network and an Innovation Specialist with Kaiser Permanente’s Innovation Consultancy, brought to the [...]

We are using Confluence for both our internal Wiki as well as for our external Community Portal. I just came across a very nasty performance bug in the version we are running on our external system. We run 3.2 and the User Search Feature keeps me waiting several minutes each time I search for users. I analyzed the problem and want to give some answers to folks that have similar problems with either confluence or other search features in any type of software. It turns out to be the typical N+1 Query and Requesting Too Much Data Problem Pattern that is responsible for this performance problem.read more
My favorite visualization this week: I came across this viz at Notabilia and it made my heart sing and my brain buzz. It ties together three things that are compelling: data viz, Wikipedia and human agreement. From the authors Moritz Stefaner, Dario Taraborelli, Giovanni Luca Ciampaglia: “The visualization above represents Wikipedia’s 100 longest discussions that [...]

When I write, whether it be a report, email, or post like this, I struggle with typos. Even when I re-read my work carefully, my eyes too often gloss over errors like duplicate articles, especially if they appear on separate lines. Worse yet is a typo that turns a word I meant to write into [...]
Jinfonet Software, a provider of Java reporting, on Tuesday announced reporting solutions for Salesforce.com’s cloud database, Database.com. This new development provides the ability to create reports and dashboards to directly access Database.com, an enterprise database built for the cloud.
As a result of this support, JReport can now access Database.com using SQL, just like accessing any other data source. Providing business intelligence solutions for Database.com simplifies the development of cloud-based enterprise applications.read more

We’ll have more to show soon, but in the meantime we wanted to tell you about some of the optimizations that have been made to deliver great looking high-performance graphics on iOS and Android.
Precision [...]
I just wanted to give you a quick glance at a little something that is in the pipe for an upcoming Unity release. As you are probably aware, Unity Pro includes water with real-time reflections and refractions.
It is a big step up from the Simple Water, but we (and many [...]
Reader Alex posted this comment on my Java on the client…again post (I’m only quoting Alex’s last paragraph). This is a very interesting part: "For good or ill, the debate is becoming moot as mobile takes over. The future of “client-side” Java is most likely on Android. What remains on the desktop will either be in the browser or split among increasingly irrelevant technologies like Swing, .NET, and Flash. The degree to which Sun/Oracle has screwed up Swing at this point is truly epic."read more

This brings our total number of asset store packages to well over 120, and the submissions keep coming in!
